Heading Local Crop Identification and Categorisation Programme

Local Crop Identification and Categorisation Programme On 13th September 2024, the Nepal Little Flower Society (NLFS), which has been implementing the Chepang Identification and Food Promotion Programme for several years, organized a Local Crop Identification and Categorization Programme. This event aimed to identify, study, and categorize a variety of local crops, including grains, fruits, vegetables, pulses, spices, oilseeds, roots, herbs, and wild foods, cultivated by farmers in the Damrang Agricultural Group's service area. The crops were classified into five categories, and based on this analysis, a plan will be developed to conserve and sustainably use these local crop varieties. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to document local crop diversity. The project has also taken steps to establish a community seed bank by analyzing the data collected from the community. A decision has been made to develop and implement a local crop diversity conservation plan in the future. The programme has also recorded traditional crop varieties that have disappeared from Ward No. 7 of Raksirang Rural Municipality. If seeds of these crops are found in other communities or regions, they will be integrated into the conservation efforts. The five categories in the analysis are as follows: 1. Crops grown by many farmers over large areas. 2. Crops grown by many farmers over small areas. 3. Crops grown by a few farmers over large areas. 4. Crops grown by a few farmers over small areas. 5. Crops that have disappeared. The project aims to preserve these crop varieties and ensure their sustainable use within the community. Mr. Bishuman Chepang Identity Cordiantor
